Jim. Dowels are meant to precisely line up two parts, while being fastened by bolts. Dowels are not meant to plug or seal anything. Your differential shaft housing (the part with two trumpet shaped ends) attaches to the transmission and rear end case on the left hand side, and to the drop housing on the right hand side. On either side there is an oil seal and one or both may be shot. (One seal is in the differential carrier in the rear end case and the other in the drop housing, between the differential gear and the brake drum.) HTH, Hendrik
