Nitrous oxide would be my drug of choice for an old non-turbo diesel, if I were only after power. It takes oxygen to burn the fuel, and airflow capability is what would limit you on getting the oxygen in. If I wanted to go further, I would go with water/methanol (washer fluid) injection. The methanol acts as a fuel and the water helps keep things from getting too hot.
If you get a diesel too lean with NOx, it won't burn valves like a gas engine, it just won't fire. But if you get it too rich with another fuel going in you will get detonation.
