I just made one for my F-30. I did it just like you mentioned. I coped the original flywheel housing, made a flange for the starter mounting, set the gear lash, tacked and welded it all up. I have done a lot of cast welding and the one thing I have noticed is these castings on the F-series are very brittle. Take the chill out of the cast and weld a very little at a time. The best thing to do is to stick the housing in a forge after you have it tacked up then weld it. I guess your gas grill may work also. Good luck to ya.
