First thing I would do is check the date code on the engine block. If cast later than the tractor that would be a dead giveaway that the claim is boggis. If a MD block is opened up to use 4.125 pistons and sleeves and all external parts are like a MD it could be hard to say what he has. Block casting numbers for diesel blocks are most times near top or below the left frame rail. MD blocks have a 4 number casting followed by letters. SMD through to 450 have 6 numbers followed by R1 through to R5. All original 450 late 400 blocks and some replacement blocks are R5. Size and serial # stamped on block (above injection pump just below the head) may help tell where the block started out. Original MD blocks may have FBKMD or something like that before the serial # for size. After that cubic inch size was stamped before the serial #, Replacement blocks could be different.
