if if will fire, but not stay running, your carb may not be metering fuel. it could be as simple as a plugged up jet or the needle/seat stuck closed.
timing
Have someone "bump" your starter, with your finger over the #1 spark plug hole. when you feel compression on your finger...stop. the insert a long screwdriver on the hole, and roll the engine to TDC. take the dist. cap off and look where the rotor os pointing....it should be very close to the #1 terminal. if not,,, shes out of time. always use new spark plugs.....ive seen old ones go dead.
it could also be stuck valves, if the tractor has sat a while.
a motor needs these things to run...fire....fuel, compression and air.
