Robert, a couple other things that gave D-282s a bad reputation where 1)they only have 4 main bearings, whereas most heavy-duty 6-cylinder diesel have 7 mains, and 2)their propensity to break head bolts or blow head gaskets or both. Here again, most heavy-duty diesels have 6 or more head bolts around each cylinder whereas the D-282s just had 4 around each cylinder. That's what happens when you decide to put a diesel head on a block designed for gasoline applications, which is what the D-282 came from. Otherwise, despite all their quirks, D-282s were a good engine generally. We just have to remember a lot of things have changed in the 40-some years of engine technology when the 282s were first designed.
