Z-Bar, that is correct if the rear end has never been worked on. Originally, the 06s & the earlier 56s had a soft plug beside the inner bull-gear bearing that sealed the axle housing separate from the rear-end housing. You filled the axle housing to the level of the check/fill plug on the side of the axle housing separately from the trans. level dipstick. Now, if you ever worked on the rearend so that you had access to the plugs, you were supposed to knock those plugs out so that the axle housings & transmission case were one big, common reservoir that was just filled at the dipstick. More than likely, your rear end on your 706 has never been worked on in that area. This is the way the 66s & 86 Series were set up from the factory.
