The seal does have an outer metal part. If you didn't get that out, it's still in there. Original seals are about double the thickness of what you'll get at the dealer today. One modern seal is adequate and will be easier to remove down the road.
On the brake bands, look for a shop that rebuilds clutches to get your originals relined. Have them use clutch liner instead of brake liner.
All the new bands are made by the same Chinese factory, so they will all have the poor fit issue. HOWEVER, it's been a couple of years since I've read a complaint about the brake band fit. They used to pop up all the time. Take a look at the messages you're finding and see how old they are.
