The best answer I can find after researching this is that someone in the foundry made a mistake that day. The letter 'A' was used as the prefix letter on many different part numbers in the 30's and 40's, and perhaps someone got confused on what number they were putting together.
On this particular part, I am assuming it is the engine block? If so, is there a provision for a fuel pump with a block off plate over it? My brother has a block like that and there are strange numbers on it too, as these were originally intended for truck use, but were redirected to tractors to help meet demand.
The only other possibility is that the part was intended for Australia, though those parts were usually prefixed with two letters, AP, and again this was a part number system, not a date system, so the specter of a mistake comes back into play.
