Yes you can. Can't say that lining up the clutch is any more difficult than if you separate at the engine. The drive shaft is a bit floppy and it would be best to have another fella available to help guide it back in place when you rejoin. As far as backlash, someone can tell you the exactly proper way of doing it but for back yard guys, just be sure to leave a little backlash, don't set it tight.
