If you have a distributor you should check to see if you're getting battery voltage to the coil. Use a volt meter and with the ignition switch in the on position and the points open you should have voltage on both small terminals on the coil. If you have voltage rub the points with some 320 wet or dry until shiny then see if the engine will start. If you have a mag make sure your grounding switch isn't grounding out the points.
