My dad's first tractor was an F-12, bought for, I think, $400 in 1944. It spent a lot of time cultivating corn. The cultivator was raised manually, with a lever on each side of the operator. Raising took a lot out of Dad. It was and is still on steel, front and rear and is now in a museum.
Starting when I was pre-teen, I played with it a lot unsupervised. While pulling, I would shift from 3rd to 2nd without clutching. Another little experiment was, while driving up a steep hill, holding the clutch in and letting the 12 roll backward, then pop the clutch. The hill had to be steep, or with the steel lugs it would not roll. They provided a lot of traction when the clutch was released and the front end, all ready higher than the rear, would rear-up 1-1/2 or 2 feet off the ground. Do not try this at home.
