My co-worker says thanks. This is what the shifting problem was on his M. After removing the shifter, he noticed that the 1rst/reverse shift fork was slid back some. He moved it forward with a long screw driver, reassembled, and it worked. If it continues to happen it certainly sounds like the shifter has worn a little short.
