James, I purchased a 450-D that also ran very slow on gas. The previous owner said it always ran that slow. It was hard to keep it running after starting it. Found out the timing was too retarded. Set it up some and now it idles plenty fast and no black smoke on startup. Don't remember what the timing should be set to, but it's probably in the owners manual. Something else to try. Al
