I'm assuming you have a belly pump. If it has a coupling then the pump turns all the time but only creates pressure when you pull the handle. It will stop working anytime you push in the clutch. It will only work a one way cylinder unless you add a valve for 2 way operation. Your pump should have oil in it all the time even if you aren't using it unless its disconnected. Your outlets should have plugs to prevent water and dirt from getting into the system. If you pull the lever to get pressure without the plugs it will spray oil all over the place.
