The end spring plate (complex metal stamping) has a bypass return function which assures the oil leaking past the side of the gears, returns to the input (suction) side of the setup. This should provide a path that eliminates all but minimum near gravity levels of pressure on the seal. It is not a high pressure seal at all. End play is an indication of excessive wear, If it is more than .001, I would say it needs to be replaced. Nwe are pricy, and rebuilt are possible, but I have no sources to recommend. If the pump was taken apart it is very possible to put it together such that the above mentioned plate is on the pressure side, it will blow the seals out immediately. Jim
