Does the distributor cap have a number 1 next to one of the terminals and were the wires in the correct place? Normally the distributor should be turned so that the tachourmeter drive faces the rear of the tractor. That eliminates some of the bend in the cable. If you can just move the wires one hole it is easy to change. If the distributor drive is out of time it means changing the timing the oil pump.
