I have both a M and H with the Heisler 9 speeds and think they are a great item on those model tractors. As Bob M. says they are nothing like a TA but do provide 4 additional gears I find very useful. The four additional gears are for speed ranges between the standard 4th and 5th. When I obtained my M up in Iowa I was told they came out to provide a 7 MPH speed which was required for a rotary hoe to work properly. My uncle had one on a M when he farmed corn in Iowa back in the late 1940's and 1950's and found the Hi 4th provided about a 12 MPH road gear with considerable torque for a heavy load of picked corn. I believe the Heisler on M tractors is fairly common but no so on Farmall H's. After liking my M Heisler so much I went on a hunt for a H with one and it was not easy and took several years before I found a nice one last summer. There is also the same type of modification produced by M&W with a cable control mechanism which looks like a choke cable on a lawn mower. I believe the Heisler is a much cleaner and nicer installation which seems appropriate with the tractor. I would certainly recommend you give the tractor some serious consideration as you won't find many H's with one from my experience, Hal. P.S. Since the Heisler speeds up the PTO and the belly pump it is not recommended to use either when in the higher speed ranges as those components will be over running their design limits. My tractors have a belly pump disconnect which can be engaged when using the higher speed ranges.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
