Look close at the picture that shows the planter in use from the back. Mine have chains with steel balls attached on either side of the center bar that the chain goes through. The steel balls are bigger than the opening the chain goes through. The way mine operate is you reach back and move the bar till it hits the ball and raises the row marker till the weight of the other row marker takes over and drops to the ground.
You'll need to pick a reference point to set the row markers. I'm set up on 36" rows and the row marker arms are set such that I line up the radiator cap with the row mark. It makes it easy to get nice straight rows.
