The driveline/pinion gear turns the ring gear. This is connected thru a spider assembly to both axles thus driving both wheels at the same time. If one wheel loses traction and spins there is no reason for the other wheel to do anything. By applying the brake to the spinning wheel the torque from the drive line is then routed to the other wheel thru the spider assy. causing that wheel to turn. Vern
