Yes, you will need feeler guages. And yes, the shop manual should outline the lash procedure. If it does not have it, post here, and I will be happy to walk you through it.
Straightening a bent push rod works in a pinch, but once they bend they are apt to bend again. I agree, that a stuck or sticky valve caused the issue. so, make sure you have good oil flow to the valve train. I would replace the push rod, and CIH should have them.
