You should be able to get #1 at TDC by shining a light into the spark plug hole. But, your distributer has to be aligned with the oil pump. I don't have the details as it has been a while since I assembled my 460HU. It is explained in the engine manual, may be in the I&T manual too. Also there are marks on the crankshaft pulley to be used with a timing light once you get it to run at TDC. You shouldn't have to remove anything to see them, although they are hard to find and clean so you can use the light.
