Hi all, quick question that I'm thinking will be pretty easy. I have a IH 300 Utility and I'm getting ready to change the oil in it. Last time I changed the oil I just put in straight SAE 30. The manual says to use SAE 30 above certain temp, SAE 20 in mid temps, and SAE 10 in cold temps. What I'm wondering is if there is a better alternative with all the modern oils now. I'm sure the manual was printed back in the 50s when the tractor was made. I don't really understand what the numbers on oils mean (i.e. what 10W-30 actually means) so I'm hoping you guys can tell me if I should just use a straight weight like the manual says, or go with another oil type. I live in central Indiana so we get all the seasons here. Thanks.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
