SM did not come with power steering. Lots of them were converted by dealers and farmers to use Char-Lynn and Behlen units. The Behlen unit typically mounts ahead of the light bracket and requires cutting the steering shaft at that point. It runs off a small hydraulic pump mounted behind the distributor, or takes power from the live-power pump if you SM came with one of those. If it's the total Behlen unit, it will have a little oil reservoir mounted under the hood and in front of the gas tank on the right side of the tractor. One thing to check is the oil level if the system isn't working well. If the oil is okay, you may have more serious problems.
