Regular production farmall 450 tractors were made the last 2 months of 1956. Both 400 and 450 tractors had small upgrades or changes during there production runs. Tractors are mostly the same basic chassis with some changes along the way. 400 tractors used C264 and D264 engines with engine serial numbers a continueation of the 264 engine serial numbers starting with SM tractors. 450 tractor and engine serial numbers started with 501. Last engine blocks used in 400 tractors was the same casting number as a 450 engine block. With original ones having 264-400 or 281-450. Engine wise officially the last 400 and the first 450 made only differed in piston and sleeve size and maybe the manifold on gasoline, but the manifolds may have changed shortly before C281. Chassis had changes like the rear steer support, From key to key with push button start Extra holes to turn 2 extended selector shaft hydraulic valves from single to double acting without sheet metal removal if 3 valve equiped. Rear light and support moved from right side of the battery box 400 to left side 450. This next change could cause problems for the original poster if parts are mismatched. 450 farmall tractors have a different clutch pedal, clutch operating rod going from the pedal and if equiped with a T/A a different T/A clutch operating shaft.
Other changes or changes from the first 400 to last 450 or upgrades to both would take a lot of space and time. If a specific question about some parts is made I will try to answer.
Also a 400 was the same basic chassis as a SMTA with a smaller fuel tank on all but some of the later ones. Engine changes for more power, Hydraulics that robbed just a little more power and a smaller fuel tank, and Lots of farmers were not to happy with fuel usage when the 400 tractors came out.
