You have the typical symptoms of a pump getting air in it. It doesn't happen often but you may have an air leak in the system but yet not leak fuel out. Most often it is a hose. It gets pulled in a little from the vacuum of the charge pump and then expands back again when not running so you have no fuel leaking. Any leak above the level of the fuel in the tank can also let in air but not leak fuel.
Be sure to check at the timing window to see if there are any "coffee grounds". That would indicate the weight retainer ring is breaking up and restricting the return.
