That is the way the early axles all were made. There was no big notch for the axle clamps, just the smaller index notches. Later axle clamps had a cast slug that fits the later style axle housings. We had to knock the slug out to use them on early tractors. The first production C (number 501) was built on January 20, 1948. There was no foundry at Louisville at that time. All castings were hauled in from somewhere else. So there are a lot of "Q" date codes on early tractors. All the codes you read as "O" are no doubt "Q". The first tractor built in March was 1118 so 1301 was built in March.

(The first 81 Super As were built in December '47.)
