The bull pinion retainer, on SC &SH, is easy to remove without getting into the trans. It's the regular H and I suspect the regular C that you have to get into the trans. I have done an H,SH,&SC.
The "inside friction plate"/brake pad has no retainer just pry it off. Clean the splines thoroughly. The brake pad discs need to be able to move freely on those splines.
The "brake interior housing" is called the "bull pinion retainer" These may need to be machined if they are too grooved.
To remove the bull pinion retainer I use 3 small chisels in 3 different locations around the retainer, look for the indents to put chisels in. Tap them in a little at a time till it comes out. If you tap in too far you risk breaking it and or binding. It's a 5 minute job getting it off.
No shaft to drop.
Once you have the retainer off the bull pinion gear can be easily removed, just pulls out, to clean the splines. I tape up gear,bearing,and seal surface in a plastic bag and blast the splines in the blast cabinet.
