Sometimes Ether is the only good/reasonable way to mount a tire. Ever tried to mount a 20 or 26 ply log skidder tire in the woods when its -30*F out? Only way to mount it is with a fresh can of ether. Been doing it for many years and never had a problem. I do it carefully and cautiously. One of the keys IME is a fresh can of ether as it ignites faster and cleaner, once the can is used a little then its potency goes down and will sometimes not light. Also if you try it once and it doesn't work then let the tire sit overnight before trying again.
Also you can do the igniting from a distance. Strike anywhere matches can be thrown a good distance and ignite the ether from afar.
Use all of this at your own risk. If your not comfortable with it then don't do it.
