The belt will stay on the pulleys if properly lined up and tensioned. We used to have "tractor rodeos" at the county fair to see who could do it the fastest. The pulley shafts have to be parallel and the pulleys have to be in line. With practice, you can sight along the edge of the pulley and get it right on the first try. The belt just needs to be tight enough not to slip. If you do not need a twist to get the rotation right, it needs to be tight enought that the top and bottom don't rub. The lenght of the belt depends on what you are doing. Usually the long belts were for running something that you need to get access to, so the tractor would not be in the way. Back in the 50s on the farm we used the belt pulley for many things, a saw mill, a thresher, a feed mill, a wood saw mounted on the tractor (a very dangeroust thing), a silage chopper, a silage blower and so on.
