Sorry, I realize I wasn't very helpful there. If it's a distillate, as John D said it will probably have a sheetmetal heat shield on the manifold, a diesel won't. The diesel will have a carb and ignition system like a gas tractor, but will also have injectors like a diesel, which is the clue that it is a gas start diesel. If you can get a model number that would be a big help. Check the photo gallery on this site (see Gallery heading on the menu at the left side of page) to kind of narrow it down. If it is a distillate tractor, they are not particularly rare, nor are they undesireable. If it were me, I would just put gasoline in it and not even mess with trying to run it on kerosene, which is the modern substitute for distillate (okay, I might try it once). If it is a gas start diesel, they work pretty well, too, if they are in good condition. If not, you may be in for a heap of work or maybe just a little tune-up and adjustment.

He had told my father
