I have used a belt in the past to start engines. First time I went to start the WC, one of the rusted rims gave up and fell off. Jacked it up and tryied using a JD 520, but the bearing in the pulley was going out so you couldn't get it tight enough and get it out of gear. Had to get the 8N ford and a come-along to winch the 520 backwards so I could get the tension I needed to get the belt turning. You do have to get them lined up nice and square and get some tension on the belts to use them. Pulleys have a crown so once everything is in place and tight the crown helps keep the belt traking to the center of the pulley.
