It has to come out and weld material added to the tip. It is a common problem.
Once the shifter is removed, a stout screwdriver can be used to line up the shifting rails.
You can also buy a repair thing-a-mug-jig that corrects some of the sloppyness in the shifter lever. I have one sitting on my desk but don't have the packaging. I bought it on eBay. It also replaces the 5/8th plugs (Welsh plugs) that will be destroyed when removing the shifter
