The timing mark to get you started is on the flywheel...its marked 1-4 TC. whichs means you'll be on top dead center of one or the other of those cylinders. I'd suggest removing all four plugs, remove the valve cover, rotate engine, until you come up to timing mark--at that point you'll be on one or the other cylinder...look for both valves closed... ie. should have some gap between the rocker arms and push rods. The other cylinder will have the intake valve pushed down, so you'll know right off which cylinder you want to set the valves on. Set the valves on that cylinder (I personally wouldn't even worry about the engine being hot....the difference is minimual, and its a whole lot more comfortable not to have your hands burned)(use the 14thousanths feeler guage). Once you've set #1 cylinder, take your crank, or use the fan and rotate the engine (clockwise) I ususally have my wife turn the crank. Take a piece of baling wire and stick in the #4 cylinder and you'll feel the piston coming up, when the cylinder reaches its highest point, set the valves on that cylinder. Repeat for #s 3 and 2....I hope this may be of some help to you. email me if you have further questions. Don't use a short piece of wire...make it long enough you can't accidentally drop it in the cylinder...
