Don't think a typical Woods three jaw coupler will dampen torsional loads much. A Woods Sure-flex would probably do a better job but they are more expensive. There are a number of flexible elements to choose from.
Most three piece couplers are designed to compensate for radial and angular offsets and not for pulse evening.
I run a Valby 5" chipper off my 504. I have never had any problems. Good chippers are designed to absorb impact loads. It is done at the heavy knife plate (flywheel).
Anyway, Surplus Center has the three-piece three-jaw couplers. They are also in abundance on eBay.
I consider the SMTA PTO as quite robust considering all the rocks I have ground up in my bush hog.
