Here are my observations, after running a mic on and around a few things, strait edging the snout.. etc.
the pulley seemed to be spinning true, no out of round.. however.. after looking over the pulley and the snout and the keyway, here are my guesses:
1, this pulley has obviously been replaced.. ie.. it's been off and put back on.
the snout is true, not necked, not ground or machined on.. no file or wire wheel / sanding marks. lucked out there. key and set for the key are perfect.. not beat up.. no divots inthe shaft, and shaft face is clean no bet marks or houges / signs of heat or torching.
3, there are irregular shallow striations on the ID of the pulley hub.. not like milling marks where it was cast and machined.. .. and the keyway is wide and does look hand tampered with. It's my guess this pulley was taken off and left off to rust.. or it is a replacement that rusted and was used, and the prev owner used a flat file or similar and hogged the key way out, and then took probably a sanding stone that you could chuck into a drill or die grinder and 'reamed' out the id of the pulley hub.. perhaps to remove the rust. I believe they got it a tad oversize. might still have been a press fit.. but perhaps not tight enough or they felt not tight enough. in any case, at the union of the snout end to the hub in the recess where the ratchet is I found more 'stuff' in there.. this stuff was protected from the elements, and when i chipped it out with the pick, it looks all the world like plain old grey JB WELD. I also found a red material.. not paint.. it was translucent.. reminds me of urethane or varnish red tinted.. was like hard glue.. but brittle.. foud a bead of it aft of the pulley hub at the crankshaft and a lil up the bore/id of the hub.. Again.. i surmise that after 'brudder' hogged the hole out and cut the keyway and it wasn't a real tight interference fit that they put red loctite on the snout, and then a HANDFULL of jbweld into the hub id, and then drove her on with the timing cover in place and tight, and in doing so, it on=bviously did not allow the seal and cover to pilot around the hub seal diameter, and thus wore more and allowed it to run oil. mind you all the excess jb weld extruded forward and made a near impossible to remove glop up ahead of the snout in the inner section of the pulley( had to chip out, then ream the hole before I could even get a CHASE in there )..
anyway.. that's my non scientific prognostication about how/when/why it was on, and leaked.
i see no other damage to the cover or cover gasket, crank has no thrust play and no side/side movement.. I think all the problems were in that hub pulley...
