Actually Wardner, your friend is right. Your battery contains some number of cells. Each cell has a potential difference of 12V. Inside your battery, these cells are connected in parallel. By connecting them in parallel, the voltage remains constant. If your battery has say 4 cells, then the amperage available would be four times that of a battery with a single cell. What was probably the case with your battery is that it contained more cells than your friends. Thus, the amperage was greater and the starter turned faster. Your friendly Napa sells many different 12V batteries, each with different ratings for cold cranking amps. How could this be, a 12V battery is a 12V battery right? Wrong! A 12V battery with 4 cells will have 4 times the amperage of one with 1 cell. Any guess at which batteries weight more? -ben
