Another way to tension the belt (instead of changing belt lengths or machining an adjustable pitch alternator pulley) is use a clutch idler pulley from a garden tiller or cheap riding mower. You'd have to fabricate a suitable arm to hold the idler but if you laid it out right it would work nice.
