It is possible to fit it in there and still use a slotted arm for adjustment. I can't tell you exactly how, but there are many around here that are done this way. I think they raise the alternator up higher than the generator. Just experiment with different positions till it looks like it will work, then make your brackets. It may help to make a cardboard template of the alternator, then make brackets out of cardboard. Then you can transfer the paterns to steel.
