Look at the shifter shaft and see if it has ware where it goes thru the top cover , next check the keyway in it . Look over the shifter cam and see how bad the detent slots are. Check the reverse shifter lever for loose pins and the shifter rod going down into the reverse shifter fork for a loose fitting key. No doubt that the cover is worn in the shifter lever hole and also the rev lever hole . Myself i have never bought a top cover as i had a machinist that would bore them out dead center of the holes and rebush them with a bushing and do it for forty bucks while i waited. Also replace all the headed pins and ya may need to take the shift lever off the tractor and have it rebushed also as i have had several that were plum slap wore out and had to redo the dash support also .
