That hex retainer is nothing more than a big pipe plug. If the hex shaped portion is too rounded over to use a conventional wrench, use a pipe wrench, BIG vise-grips, whatever it takes to get a grip on it and spin it out of there. Weld a big nut onto it if that's what it takes. Once you get it out, toss it in the trash and get a new one.
