The green could've been factory. Legend has it that IH would paint the tractors whatever color you wanted by special order. If a large construction company's color was green for example, they might have ordered a fleet of Ms all painted green to match the rest of their equipment.
Was their red paint between the green and the tank mount pads too? That would mean it was disassembled twice for paint.
That looks like primer under the green paint, though... Maybe it was some overzealous John Deere fan painting it up as a joke. Do the wheels show any evidence of yellow paint? That would be a dead giveaway.
