I'm pretty sure I recall the owner's manual accompanying our new 1086 pictorially illustrating a narrow front end that was available from the factory, although I have never seen an 86 series with a NF. This would be an exception to the rule about "farmall" designating a series available with a NF since the 86 series was never called Farmall. As regards from Art styling morphing to the "chiseled granite" or "Soviet Realism" look, we actually have the JD folks to thank for the former and the Pennsylvania Railroad folks to thank for the latter: JD hired famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy to spruce up their cornpoppers after he had spruced up the Pennsy engines at the request of the Penn CEO. Farmall copied the shift in tractor styling cued by Loewy. BUT... when the Penn CEO died in the '50's, the Penn puhbahs (who had always hated the prettified Loewy engines) canned Loewy and sh..tcanned his designs for their railroad. Other manufacturers, including IH, followed suit and thus was ended the most remarkable esthetic design period in industrial history.
