Rather than clean up gas from a crud filled tank you might consider cleaning up the tank. Rust and other sediments can be removed and a liquid epoxy liner placed using one of many kits. I have used one from Eastwood and was very satisfied with the results on a tank that had been filled with rain water for a number of years. Follow the link to take a look.
