Actually, pretty easy. The 6 volt and generator have nothing to do with the timing.
Start by taking out the spark plugs and remove the mag. turn the engine over slowly with your thumb over the #1 spark plug hole (one nearest the radiator). When you feel it start to have compression, take a wood dowel rod or a piece of wire, and insert it into the plug hole, and get it in to where it touches the top of the piston. continue to turn engine over slowly until the piston is at the top of its travel. You may have to turn the engine back and forth a little when you are near the top to make sure you are truly at TDC on the compression stroke.
Next, with a piece of chalk or similar, mark your mag body next to the cap where the #1 spark plug wire post is. Take cap off. now, rotate the mag drive until the rotor is pointed to your mark on the mag body. Next, install the mag back onto the tractor, with the mag body rotated as far as possible AWAY from the block. ONce the mag is on, install bolts loosely, so you can still rotate the mag. Rotate it slowly back towards the block, you should hear the impulse snap. Lastly, set the mag in the middle of its available rotation on the bolt slots. Tighten down, reinstall cap and wires.
you are now timed as per the IHC shop specs.
Make sure your points are clean and set to .013. Also, make sure that your rotor and cap internal contacts are clean. If you have an older rotor, the rotor contact is adjustable. I will have to look up the clearance setting, but I believe it is around .020, and if it is a newer rotor, nothing to do. If you need help, feel free to call me if you get stuck 412 551 2445.
