A saw tooth throttle will NOT wear down IF used properly. You do NOT want to just "ratchet" the throttle when you pull back on it. The proper way is to push down on the handle and "disengage" the tooth on the handle from the "saw teeth" on the plate. The one I replaced on my 1950 H was the original, and it lasted 60 years.
