One of the previous responses suggests that soil and terrain type factor into the number and size of plow bottoms the tractor can pull. This is highly relevant. In extreme N. MO and S. IA the soils have a shallow A horizon and very heavy (high clay content) B horizon along with a highly irregular terrain (hills will slope from crest to draw and will also undulate (rise and fall) across that major slope. This creates a particularly challenging set of variables for conventional farming utilizing moldboard tillage. Our Super MTA handles 2-16's well under these conditions, and 3-14's less well. In comparison, a 1066/86 is ordinarily thought of as a 5- or 6-16's tractor but 4-16's were used as often as 5-16's in that area. A 10XX pulling 6-16's invariably had the injectors turned way up. In sandy soils, the SMTA could likely handle up to 4-16's if the weight of the plow could be handled adequately (somewhat questionable in my mind) and if traction could be obtained. Bear in mind that these tractors are getting older and more prone to breakdown and have higher maintenance requirements. I'd therefore conservatively suggest for typical use find the plow that the tractor could handle for your soil and terrain type, then actually USE a plow one size smaller. For example, we could be using the 3-14's, but the 2-16's operate better and is a bit gentler on the SMTA and the TA is used less often. Good Luck.
