Unless the cross shaft is bent, or the Fork pushing the throwout bearing is loose or partially sheared on the shaft, a clutch will get less and less freeplay as it wears. Making the rod too long, not too short. Mis adjusted fingers on the Pressure plate, or a flywheel cut that didn't reestablish the step depth, wioll also make the fingers move too far in towards the Flywheel. (your rod too short issue.
