Whatever's going on it sounds like the pump is losing prime.
340's rear end is the same design as the 460, so the entire transmission/differential sump is the hydraulic reservoir. It's vented so there's no air to let out.
Either your pump is bad or the pickup tube is sucking air.
A trick on the larger tractors is to dump an extra 5 gallons of hytran into the transmission/rear end to cover the pickup, but I don't know if something like that will work on a 340.
