Jim- I just recently ran into the same thing on my 'H' countershaft. It worked just fine, I was careful to 'park' the new seal so that it's lip didn't land in the little groove worn in the coupler end. No leaks so far! BTW I also replaced the PTO seal, I put 2 new style seals there. Just in case.
